The New York Giants decided to add some depth to the defensive backfield in the 2020 NFL Draft. With the 10th pick, the Giants have selected Darnay Holmes the cornerback out of UCLA. A 5-foot-10, 195-pound defensive back that is expected to transition from cornerback to nickelback, Holmes entered the draft early as a junior, after three solid seasons with the Bruin defense, where he was a tough defender to throw against.
This past season as a junior for the Bruins, a season in which he missed the first two games of the year because of an injury, Holmes recorded 33 total tackles, one of which were for loss. After back-to-back seasons of three interceptions, Holmes snatched two this year — a number that led UCLA — to finish with eight for his entire career.
“I think he had planned on (entering early) his whole career,” UCLA head coach Chip Kelly said on a recent teleconference. “Darnay graduated college in three years, has a degree. You know, he’s kind of set himself up. The biggest concern you have with somebody if they are leaving early, you make sure that they’ve gotten their education, and Darnay did that. I think he’s had a plan. And I wasn’t here when he first got recruited but I think he had a plan all along.
