NFL Switches To 17 Game Regular Season

The NFL will officially move to a 17-game schedule beginning in 2021.

League owners voted approval of changing the regular season from 16 games to 17 during the Annual League Meeting. The new schedule will go into effect during the upcoming 2021 NFL regular season and preseason, which will now be limited to three games per team.

“This is a monumental moment in NFL history,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.

“The CBA with the players and the recently completed media agreements provide the foundation for us to enhance the quality of the NFL experience for our fans. And one of the benefits of each team playing 17 regular-season games is the ability for us to continue to grow our game around the world.”

Each NFL franchise will participate in an additional AFC vs. NFL game based on division standings prior to the 2021 season and on a rotating divisional basis, with AFC teams hosting the matchups during the upcoming season.
